As the largest department of the school, it gathers almost 250 students of all ages through primary and secondary education. It employs 18 teachers at three locations: in Ivanićgradska Street, Travno and Zaprešić.

Piano belongs to the group of keyboard instruments. Most important composers: W. A. Mozart, D. Scarlatti, J. S. Bach, L. v. Beethoven, F. Liszt, F. Chopin, C. Debussy, R. Schumann and others.

Classes at the department follow the prescribed curriculum of the Republic of Croatia, covering the following subjects: piano as the main subject, piano as an obligatory instrument, piano for students of the theory department, piano duo, piano trio, chamber music and accompaniment in cooperation with other departments of the music school.

Students and teachers of the department permanently improve their knowledge through professional activities and seminars, concerts and festivals organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture, HDGPP, and independently. During the school year, the best students of the piano department perform at internal and public events in the school's concert halls, as well as at concerts in the Croatian Music Institute, the Croatian History Museum, the Mimara Museum hall and the HDS hall.

Exceptionally gifted students participate every year in domestic and foreign competitions of young musicians and achieve very notable results. In addition to the mentioned activities, it is worth mentioning the successful participation of students and their teachers in the spectacular event 24 hours of Chopin in HGZ, on February 22, 2010, which marked the two hundredth anniversary of Chopin's birth.
